For Foundry, much of our vision comes from John 1:14.
So the word became human and made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness, and we have seen His glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son. John 1:14 NLT
Since the beginning, we've looked to this to understand not only how Jesus is in our world, but how He calls us to be in our world. Eugene Peterson, in his translation began this verse say "The Word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood.,,". God is with us, it's a common conversation in churches right after the Christmas season.
So we live in this reality of what it means for Jesus to be in our world. But what did it look like when He finally decided to actually start acting like Jesus? Kinda weird to think about…huh?
Here's the story.
The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. 3 The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus' mother told him, "They have no more wine."
4 "Dear woman, that's not our problem," Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come."
5 But his mother told the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
6 Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus told the servants, "Fill the jars with water." When the jars had been filled, 8 he said, "Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies." So the servants followed his instructions.
9 When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. 10 "A host always serves the best wine first," he said. "Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!"
11 This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. John 2:1-11
There are so many different things going on in this story. Chad preached another message on this passage during our series on Signs (you can catch it here). But what we are focusing on in this passage is how Jesus is pretty much unloading His moving truck on everyone. He is showing the coolest of what he owns and all the toys that show off what he does. He is outlining what the whole "full of unfailing love and faithfulness" actually looks like.
And it's a little different from what we would all expect.
So let's sneak a peak at that truck.
