Jesus Appeared On The Shore

Listen Later

John 21:1-19 and Psalm 30
On this Third Sunday of Easter, the Lectionary takes us to the post-Easter account of the appearance of Jesus to his disciples on the shore on the Sea of Galilee.  This is a fascinating account in that it is the longest post resurrection day account in the gospels.  Matthew gives us five verses.  Mark gives us zero verses.  Luke give us four.  John, however, gives us thirty three verses, including one brief story that occurred one week after the resurrection - the “Doubting Thomas” account.  As one preacher puts it, “John wins hands down in terms of the post-Easter Jesus.  And yet look at what he gives us: Jesus tending a campfire on a beach!  The last place I’d expect to find the resurrected Lord of lord and King of kings hanging around, is an isolated stretch of beach and the last thing I’d expect to find him doing in that remote place is frying fish and cooking biscuits!”  And yet this is a profound lesson for us to grasp.  The very place we need to encounter the risen Savior is in the ordinary events of our lives and it is in these ordinary events of our lives that we can enable others to encounter the risen Christ.
