I don't think that any distractions that you don't pay attention to will negatively influence your life. Faithlessness may not be the abomination of desolation. Giving up might be that. I did that once. I did. I had given up and was sure that I was going to die that way and I couldn't even look at myself straight in the eye on the inside because I was so ashamed. I was going to leave my daughter fatherless with a mother that was unsuitable.

The people in the street don't have anyone that touches them, no one that smiles at them, knowing that tells them that they want them. That could make people give up.

For secular people their death brings up the abomination of a desolation

People can and do incapacitate themselves. The power of the mind is immense.
