That idea has come up a few times in different Christian Circles, Meaning that there are people out there that treat the faith like it's a fan club to join rather than a faith to follow. But I think Pastor has correctly identified how people who complain about "Jesus Fans" are themselves guilty of being fans of Jesus rather than "true followers" of Jesus.
