They speak of judgment, first, and then the restoration of Israel, though perhaps not in the way that their listeners expect. He compares his movement with the mustard plant, this pernicious botanical species that the Latin naturalists describe as a destructive pest, since it invades agricultural land and attracts birds, thus destroying the crops. He compares the Kingdom of God with yeast, which remains hidden inside the bread until the decisive moment, when it can no longer be ignored. He speaks preferably to the lowest of the low, the nobodies: the prostitutes, children, lepers and beggars, and he asks them to be ready, to watch and be alert for the signs.

An Historical Search

Surprisingly good, informative book. If you want a short, concise book re: the historical context of Jesus and the beginnings of Christianity the May the book you've been looking for. It certainly would not be the end of your search, but it would be a good beginning, an overview if you will. The Historical Search... is well researched and documented, and well written. Much better researched, documented and written than other Charles River publications I have read. Given the above and the price, free, I don't see how one could go wrong. A good, informative read.

Who do you say that I am?

There have been multiple opinions about Jesus' identity. Jesus died on a roman cross, meaning a political crime reserved for bandits, insurrectionists and revolutionaries. This book makes abundantly clear that we should reconsider the historical figure of Jesus, looking at the oldest strata in the New Testament, and although it doesn't take a position one way or another, it calls to the attention that the romans wouldn't have crucified a wisdom teacher who spoke of lilies in the field and birdies having enough to eat.
