Jesus’ Triumphal Entry: Preparation for a New Thing

Listen Later

The triumphal entry is one of the few accounts from Jesus’ life that appears in all four Gospels (Matthew 21:1-17; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:29-40; John 12:12-19). In Luke’s narrative, Jesus tells two disciples to go ahead of Him and get a donkey colt (19:31). Please do not neglect the dynamics many in the crowd overlooked that day. The people expected an Israeli military messiah. Instead, they received The Messiah of the world. The people looked for a warrior to alleviate their political rivals. Instead, they welcomed the warrior Who destroyed their greatest adversaries: death, hell, and the grave. The people were cheering The One they thought would restore David’s throne. Instead, they acclaimed The One Who is seated at The Sovereign Majesty’s right hand on high (Hebrews 1:3).

Main Text: Luke 19:28-40 (ESV)
