As we examine John 15:18-16:4a, we see that Jesus explains to his disciples, on the evening before His death, that the world will hate them (because they belong to Him and because the world hates the Father); but although the world hates them, Jesus also promises that He will send the Spirit to help them as they get about the missionary task of bearing witness to Jesus. These words of warning from Jesus helps the disciples know what to expect as they follow Jesus - what the cost associated with following Him looks like so that, as they undergo persecution on account of the world, that they might not fall away.
