Jiu Jitsu Culture

Listen Later

Taking a quick break from exploring the technical side of jiu jitsu, Dan and Andy talk about how to build a meaningful Jiu Jitsu culture in your academy.   Coming into the two year anniversary of the opening of Gracie Barra Livonia gives occasion to pause and reflect on the type of culture that has been developed there, and how much of it was intentionally created.   The guys discuss how corporations and organizations place a great deal of effort into engineering a culture of collaboration, teamwork and a sense of belonging by using methods that are already intrinsic to the nature of training BJJ.    Dan reflects on how the military influenced his thinking on the role of leadership and how that has affected his approach to running an academy.    A large part of the conversation is hinged on how grateful they both are to be part of such a wonderful community, as well as showing  thanks you to everyone who has played a role in building and maintaining such a great culture at GB Livonia.   This is a podcast to play to anyone who is curious why Jiu Jitsu is such a great vehicle for bringing meaning to ones life; Why it's more that just grappling.   Its unfortunate that many people view bjj as just a service that they pay for, and a membership as an opportunity cost.  Dan and Andy hope that this discussion will shed some light on how its possible for a jiu jitsu academy, with the right culture,  to offer much more than just a place to learn Jiu Jitsu.
