Travis talks with Joe Balog. His career fishing big smallmouth tournaments started in about 1992. Just out of high school, he won the first-ever Bassmaster Federation Regional event held on Lake Erie.

He has won several hundred thousand dollars fishing Erie and St. Clair. He won a BASS Open on Erie, and 4 or 5 BFL events, along with dozens of other tournaments. 

His real contribution to the world of smallmouth fishing was his big water ingenuity and product advancement. Joe was a research and development staffer for Johnson Outdoors for 20 years. They used him to test all their big water stuff - He was the first to use Side Imaging on Lake Ere, they tested the performance and strength of their chargers and Talon mounts on his boat, and he helped design and test the Ultrex trolling motor - the entire idea of that motor was from himself and Koby Krieger.

In addition, He was the originator of the first goby fishing lure - ever. The Poor Boys goby was his design, and sold millions of baits. It’s likely the best selling goby lure ever.
Today, he still works for a few brands that way - Mercury, Aqua-Vu, St. Croix rods and others.  This is a great interview if you are looking at becoming a better smallmouth angler!
