I love these last verses of this chapter...they are a fantastic big-picture reminder of what Jesus came to do in the first place. It is a reminder that His presence isn’t about judgement, though it seems like that’s what we FEEL. Jesus came to SHOW us that we ARE sinful, and that we can’t escape that truth, but that there is hope and freedom FROM that sin in Him. Jesus gives us freedom...he doesn’t burden us with judgement.
Sometimes we can feel like we are getting beaten up by the scriptures because we see the standard set by Jesus, and we realize that we can’t live up to that bar...but that isn’t the point of the standard, and that feeling of judgement is really our internal admission that we can’t...the feeling of judgement is a feeling of admission. In reality, our feeling SHOULD be of thankfulness, of gratefulness, of relief...because that is the reason Jesus came down to us.
As we move into the last section of this letter from John, where we’ll see his death and resurrection, I think this is a great reminder that what’s to come for Jesus is a reminder that we are free from the same...and that guilt and judgement in our lives are emotions of admission rather than emotions that are intended from God; Jesus came to set us free.
