John 2:1-12
Let’s go to a wedding. Now not just any wedding but a Jewish wedding that took place when our Lord was here on earth. The place is Cana of Galilee. You no doubt remember the story. Mary must’ve had something to do with the food because when the wine ran out, she came to Jesus and said, “They have no wine.” That’s when the Lord Jesus commanded the servants to take the six empty water pots, fill them up with water, and then draw out the water and as they did, the discovered the water had turned into the very finest of wine. There’s a basic lesson here of course. Whatever the world provides is going to run out. If you are depending on the wine of this world, I’ve got news for you. It’s going to run out and as it continues to get less and less, it’s going to get more and more sour.
In fact, the fellow who was running this feast said, “You’ve saved the very best until now. Everybody else gives the worst later on.” That’s the way the devil operates. The devil starts with the very best and tempts you with the best. Then it gets worse and worse until finally it destroys you. The Lord Jesus Christ always has the best yet to come. For the Christian, the best is yet to come and it’s getting better and better and better as the days go by.
How does the Lord Jesus Christ work to meet the needs of our life? Well, He works by invitation. Somebody invited Jesus to come to the wedding. I hope that you have invited Jesus Christ to come to your wedding and into your life. He works by invitation. He won’t force His way in. He works by cooperation. He did not create the water in the pot. He told the servants, “Put the water in the water pot.” He didn’t go out and serve the wine. They worked with Him. There are things that only He can do.
There are some things we ought to do. He works for the glory of God. The scripture says he “manifested forth His glory” (v. 11). Why does He answer prayer? To glorify God. Why does He meet the needs of our lives? To glorify God. They had to admit this was the most wonderful wine they had ever tasted. Whatever Jesus Christ provides in your life is the best. He always gives the best, and He always keeps on giving the best and the best until the very end when we step into the best place of all, heaven.
