John the Baptist Exalts Jesus. John humbles himself: he says that Jesus is the greater and that he (John) is the lesser. It is time for the spotlight to shine on Jesus, not on him (John) - since his role is just as a subordinate and that he should not let any pride, ego and narcissism (he had none apparently) get in the way of The Mission. (I believe that some false teachers start out with the best of intentions to do right; but when it is time to step out of the spotlight and surrender it all to Jesus, they just can't because they love the attention and money too much.)
