John 3:1-7
One thing that we all have in common is birth. This is how we got on the planet. We were born. Now if you came here some other way, I certainly want to meet you, but I don’t think you did. But you know one birth is not enough. In John chapter 3 verse 3 the Lord Jesus says, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.” Born again; born from above. Why does the Lord Jesus use birth as a picture of salvation? Well, birth involves life and that’s what salvation is all about. “He that has the Son has life” (1 John 5:12). “Whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Birth involves life. Birth involves two parents. The Spirit of God uses the Word of God to impart the life of God when you believe in the Son of God. That’s how you’re born from above.
Peter tells us in 1 Peter chapter 1 being born again not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible by the Word of God (1 Peter 1:23). Jesus says that a man must be born of the Spirit of God. Birth means a new beginning. A baby has no past. You’re not about to find a policemen in the nursery at the hospital about to arrest a baby. You can’t arrest a baby! They have not done anything wrong. Ah, when you’re born again, your past is all taken care of. Life is a future for you. Nothing but a blessed future lies before you. That’s why Jesus is talking about the rebirth, the new birth, the birth from above. Birth leads to growth. Being born again is not the end; it’s the beginning. Then you start to grow, to develop your spiritual muscles, to learn how to walk and how to run and how to do the will of God.
When a person is born into this world, he is born; she is born to reach a pre-determined image. The genetic structure says, “This is what you’re going to be!” And when we’re born again by the Spirit of God, we’re going to reach a pre-determined image. You know what it is? Conformed to the image of His Son. Have you been born again? Have you been born from above by receiving Jesus Christ into your heart as your own Savior?
