John 3:8-12
The Lord Jesus Christ was a master teacher. People listened to Him. They were fascinated by Him. Not only because of His authority as the Son of God but because of His ingenuity at being able to teach spiritual truth. He often used many illustrations in His sermons from nature and from the world around. He talked about flowers and birds. About yeast and seed and sheep, and He even talked about the wind. You know in the holy land toward evening, the wind starts to come up. And I wonder if Nicodemus and Jesus as recorded in John 3 were perhaps on the housetop. The Jews often sat or relaxed on the housetop in the evening when it was cool and the wind was blowing. And this is what Jesus had to say to Nicodemus, “The wind blows where it wills, and thou hearest the sound of it, but you cannot tell from where it comes and where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”
Now interestingly enough in the Hebrew language the word “spirit” and the word “wind” are the same word. It’s also true in the Greek language. Spirit and wind are the same word. Our Lord was talking about two things here, the Holy Spirit of God and the child of God. God’s Holy Spirit is like the wind. At Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came, there was a sound of a mighty rushing wind. The wind is invisible but invincible. When that wind begins to blow, you’d better watch out! If a hurricane is coming, you’d better move! There’s power in the wind.
And there’s mystery in the wind. That’s what our Lord was talking about. You can’t explain where it came from. You can’t tell where it’s going. It’s difficult to plot the wind but the wind has life. Were it not for the wind blowing we could not have life. That’s what our Lord is saying here. God’s people, who have received God’s Spirit, are just like the wind. They’ve had the breath of life. They belong to God. They’ve experienced a miracle of the newness of life and you can’t explain it! It’s mysterious but true. Powerful. It’s wonderful. Have you had that breath of the Spirit of God to blow upon your life?
