John 4:1-6
The major theme of the Gospel of John is that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. It seemed strange then in John chapter 4 verse 6 to be told that, “Jesus therefore, being wearied with His journey, sat by the well; and it was about the sixth hour.” Here is the writer saying Jesus is the Son of God, but He was weary and He sat down to rest after His journey. John is telling us that this God became man, true man. Everything about the Lord Jesus Christ is true in His person and in His work and in His words. He became true man. He was born. He grew up. He knew what it was to work. He knew what it was to be hungry and thirsty. He certainly knew what it was to be weary, and then to suffer, and then to die.
Whatever experience of life we go through, Jesus has been there in one way or another. In fact, He was tempted just as we are and yet He did not sin. God became man. He was weary because God was seeking the lost. That’s why He became man. The Scripture says, “And He must needs go through Samaria.” No, He could’ve taken two other routes, but He chose to go through Samaria because He knew that there was a woman there who needed His ministry and that’s why He was weary. He made that long trip, came to Samaria, weary, He was seeking lost souls. His Father had begun this work back in Genesis chapter 3. When God the Father came into the garden and said, “Adam, where art thou?” Ever since then God has been seeking and saving the lost.
You may be weary today. Even before the day gets going you might get weary. Let me give you a promise. Galatians 6:9, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” The Lord Jesus did reap a harvest in Samaria. “Behold, I say unto you lift up your eyes and look on the fields for they are white already to harvest” (John 4:35). When you get weary in the Lord’s work, that’s good. Just don’t get weary of the Lord’s work. Follow the example of Jesus Christ. Seeking the lost.
