John 4:11-14
Before this day ends Americans will drink 23 million gallons of soft drinks. That’s enough to fill a bottle 530 feet tall. That’s a lot of drinking! Well, the Lord Jesus has something to say about satisfying your thirst. You find it in John chapter 4 verses 13 and 14. Jesus speaks, “Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again, but whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Of course the Lord Jesus is talking here about two different kinds of thirst. There’s a physical thirst and there’s a spiritual thirst. The Lord Jesus had said to this woman at the well, “Give Me a drink.” He was weary and He was thirsty. He used that statement simply to start the conversation that He might talk to her about her thirst. The trouble is, she didn’t know how thirsty she really was.
St. Augustine said, “To God Thou hast made us for thyself and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.” Are you thirsty today for reality? You find that in Jesus Christ. Our Lord talked about two different kinds of water: physical water in the well that could not satisfy; spiritual water that He would give that satisfies forever. He talked about two destinies. There are those who are going to thirst again and again and again. Listen to what He said, “Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again.” Whatever the world offers you to satisfy your inner thirst, it won’t satisfy. You’ll have to have more and more. Sin has to get greater and greater and it still doesn’t satisfy! In fact, in hell people are thirsting.
No, the water that Jesus gives, gives to us eternal life. It springs up within us. We carry around with us a well of living water! An artesian well that’s fresh and satisfying, and we don’t have to look to the broken, dirty cisterns of this world to find satisfaction. Have you trusted Christ? Are you satisfied in Him?
