John 4:7-10

It was most unusual for Jewish Rabbis to speak publically to women; especially to strangers. The woman at the well in Sychar was quite surprised when Jesus said to her, “Give Me to drink.” You find the account in John chapter 4 verses 7 through 10. You see the Lord Jesus Christ was thirsty. Now He had more on His mind than that, but this is where He started. He was thirsty and He was weary from His trip. The Lord Jesus had deliberately come through Samaria because He wanted to meet this woman, and He wanted to lead her into an experience of salvation. Her coming to the well when He was there was no accident. It was a divine appointment. It’s good to know today that as we follow the Lord, life is not a series of accidents; it’s a series of appointments. He goes before us. He prepares the way. We believe in the providence of God. God goes before and God plans before.

It’s interesting here in John chapter 4 to find Jesus saying, “Give Me to drink.” At the end of the Gospel of John, John 19:28, He says, “I thirst.” He’s hanging on the cross and He’s dying for our sins. Now the woman was the one who needed the drink, only she didn’t know it. That’s why Jesus said to her, “Give Me to drink.” And she said, “‘How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a woman of Samaria?’ For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.” The Lord Jesus was going to bridge that gap. By the grace of God, He was going to reach across that chasm and win this woman to salvation. She was the one who should’ve asked Him for a drink of water. He would’ve given to her the living water. Only the Lord Jesus Christ can satisfy the thirst within.

This woman was trying to find satisfaction in one marriage after another and now the man she was living with was not her husband. She wasn’t satisfied. She could only be satisfied by receiving Jesus Christ into her heart and into her life. He offered to her the living water. But first He said to her, “Would you give Me a drink?” With that simple statement, He began to build a bridge and before long she went across that bridge, and she found salvation and satisfaction.
