As the son of a raisin grower, or as a high school teacher for seven years, I taught a lot of kids of raisin growers, and I interacted with them in that way … I don’t claim to understand anything about them, there’s no way I could put them in a pigeon hole, but that’s often a good thing for fiction because it forces you to have to think very specifically about the person you’re writing about.”
