John Cena was a rising star in 2004 and on his way to filming The Marine. The U.S. Champion was taken out by the debuting Carlito, who used Cena's chain to win the title. Following that match, John Cena suffered "multiple puncture wounds" near his kidney as part of the storyline.

Carlito's associate Jesus was implied as the attacker at the after-hours club. Cena returned with a vengeance, destroying Jesus in the process.
