Consistent, daily steps work wonders. John Maxwell knows.

David talks today for the first time with John Maxwell, Author, Leadership Expert, and dynamic communicator. They start off the conversation talking about John’s recent experience playing in the Pro-Am gold tournament at Pebble Beach. David asked him what it was like to be among all those professional golfers and to describe the experience of sinking a clutch putt in that high profile event.

That personal story led into a great conversation about a wide-range of leadership topics including mindset and attitude, what value you have to offer as a leader, and what great leadership is really like.

John tells his own story in his own words about how he came to be recognized, year after year, as one of the foremost experts on the topic of leadership. It was in his mid-20s that John heard Earl Nightingale say that if a person would spend one hour a day, on one subject, for five years, that person would become an expert on that subject. That day John committed himself to becoming an expert on leadership, and he’s done exactly that through blocking out the daily time to study, ready, and learn about the topic of leadership.

The value of consistency is underrated.  John’s story is evidence of that fact. When he took the concept of consistency and applied it to the realm of learning about leadership, he proved that consistency over the long haul yields incredible results. He created life habits that compounded over time through his consistency. He created leadership tapes, books, and articles which built an incredibly influential reputation for him as a leadership expert.

But it wasn’t a straight journey. John spent many, many years as a theologian and pastor before he stepped into the realm of leadership coach and expert. His first pastoral role was in a small country church where he served faithfully but wanted to lead a larger organization. He contacted some of the pastors of the largest churches in America and asked to meet with them. Two out of ten said, “Yes.” But John’s initiative in meeting with those two men opened the door for him to meet the other eight within the next three years.

His takeaway? Your situation doesn’t determine the size of your dream? Your heart determines that. By the time John was 29 he was pastoring one of the largest churches in America himself.
