John 1:1-5

Jesus' existence did not begin in a manger.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God." (John 1:1–2, ESV)

In the beginning was Jesus (The Word)

Jesus was God

Jesus was with God

"Logos" is Greek word for "Word" meaning:

God's ultimate communication of truth about Himself.

"In the beginning was the Word..." (John 1:1a)

Before the world was created and before time began, Jesus Christ, The Word, already existed.

"Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I Am."" (John 8:58)

From the very beginning of John's gospel, John argues that Jesus is not 1 of many gods, but He is God Himself.

"...and the Word was with God" (John 1:1b)

The Trinity is ONE...but they are also distinct in nature

"Then God said, "Let us make man in our image," (Genesis 1:26a)

"The Lord says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool."" (Psalm 110:1, ESV)

"...and the Word was God." (John 1:1c)

Summary of John 1:1

Jesus has always existed from all eternity as God, in perfect fellowship with God the Father and the Holy Spirit.

"He was in the beginning with God." (John 1:2, ESV)

Jesus' Role in Creation:

1. All things were made through Jesus.

"All things were made through him" (John 1:3a, ESV)

NASA recognizes that the number of stars they estimated in the universe 10 years ago, was off by a factor of 10.

Today, what we believe:

-10 billion galaxies

-Each galaxy contains 100 billion stars

-121,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars that we know of!

"For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things were created through him and for him." (Colossians 1:16, ESV)

2. Jesus holds all things together

"...and without him was not any thing made that was made." (John 1:3b)

"...and in him all things hold together." (Colossians 1:17b, ESV)

3. Jesus upholds the universe by His powerful word

"He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power." (Hebrews 1:3a, ESV)

"In him was life, and the life was the light of men." (John 1:4, ESV)

Jesus is Life

"In him was [eternal] life." (John 1:4a, ESV)

Jesus is Light

"Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."" (John 8:12)

If you trusted Christ for eternal life and you claim to now be walking in the light, is it evident to those around you that you have been transformed by Jesus?

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1:5)

-NLT: "darkness can never extinguish it"

"In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)
