Light Bulb Moments: It's All About The Energy

John Rot: Building Success Through Mentors and Community

Listen Later

John Rot is a business, community, and charitable leader with a distinguished record of entrepreneurship and civic engagement. He began his career at Arthur Andersen, specializing in business valuations, before acquiring and growing Hortons of La Grange into what is now Hortons Home Lighting, expanding the brand to multiple locations and integrating Ace Hardware into the flagship store. In addition to building his own business, John has invested in and helped revitalize key local establishments, including the La Grange Theater, Q-BBQ, and The Hot Dog & Burger Co., leading a $2 million renovation of the historic theater. He has served on advisory boards within the lighting industry and for the Friends of the Lurie Cancer Center. He is a Founding Father and current President of The H Foundation. Recognized as Business Person of the Year by the Rotary Club of La Grange, John holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing and an MBA in Finance from the University of Illinois.

In this episode, Philip and John Rot discuss:

  • Learning from mentors and knowing when to pivot
  • Balancing strategy with hard work and hands-on learning
  • Leading with passion and surrounding yourself with the right people
  • Giving back and building long-term relationships

Lightbulb Moments:

  • Strong mentors accelerate growth and shape pivotal decisions. When markets shift, leaders must be willing to adapt rather than cling to old models. Strategic pivots, made at the right time, can unlock entirely new opportunities.
  • Tactical planning matters, but experience is earned through action. Growth requires getting your hands dirty and learning through mistakes. Skills develop over time through persistence, relationships, and practical repetition.
  • Teams reflect the energy and conviction of their leaders. When passion is modeled and taught, it becomes contagious. Success multiplies when you surround yourself with knowledgeable, committed people.
  • Entrepreneurs carry a responsibility to invest in their communities. Genuine relationships built over time create unexpected returns and partnerships. Purpose-driven passion, combined with service, can scale impact far beyond initial expectations.

“If you're going to be an entrepreneur, or if you're going to own a business, challenges [should] motivate you and energize you, [instead of] scaring you and making you want to go up, hide in the corner.” - John Rot
