John Rustad Likely Won’t Win Seats. But He Will Hurt the BC Liberals.
The incoming BC Conservatives leader was kicked out of the Liberal party last August due to showing “behaviour not supportive of our caucus team.” In a time of contrarian populism being a viable political brand, he could lead his party into a spoiler role next election.
If John Rustad succeeds in fielding a slate of credible candidates, and uses his seat to raise the party’s profile, the floundering BC Liberals Leader Kevin Falcon could win even fewer seats than predecessor Andrew Wilkinson.
As much as MLA and incoming Conservatives leader John Rustad’s takes about “[hiring] back our health-care heroes” is irresponsible, his kind of political claims can resonate, as Trump showed in the U.S. and Pierre Poilievre as federal Conservative leader.
