This story of John Stapp takes place during the era of the Korean War – the first conflict that saw the engagement of jet fighters.  Because jet fighters were capable of high speeds and tight turns, it became imperative to understand the effects of rapid acceleration and deceleration on the human body.

Dr. John Stapp was a physician with an added degree in Biophysics, and it was his task to determine how many “G’s,” that is, “how many times the gravitational pull of the earth,” – the human body can withstand – and survive?

Thus, Dr. John Stapp, who not only contributed to man’s knowledge of the limits of the human body, also contributed one of the world’s most famous adages, a seven-word gem that you’ve likely said yourself, and perhaps more than once.
