Johnny Appleseed Day celebrates the life of John Chapman, the frontier nurseryman who became the legendary folk hero Johnny Appleseed. Born in 1774 in Massachusetts, Chapman traveled across the American frontier planting apple orchards throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, often years before settlers arrived. Skilled in choosing fertile land and helping orchards grow, he later sold the trees to pioneers while also sharing his religious beliefs as a missionary. Over time, stories of his kindness and faith turned him into a symbol of generosity, frontier spirit, and planting seeds that would bless future generations.
