In this teaching, we interpret John's vision of the seven seals (Rev. 5-6) in light of the conclusions of the Olivet Discourse Seminar. In Revelation 5, we see the Father holding a scroll containing His decrees of judgment and woe against the earth. Jesus alone has the authority to execute those judgments as the arm of the Lord (Is. 30:30-32, 40:10, Is. 51:5, 9, 52:10, Is. 53:1-2, 59:16, 63:5), the instrument through whom the Father accomplishes His “work” of judgment (e.g. Is. 28:21, Jer. 50:25, Ps. 110). When Jesus takes the scroll and opens the seals, it means that He is initiating the judgments/signs of the last generation. These will ultimately result in the wicked being cleansed and purged from the earth (cf. Zech. 5:1-3). The world will be shaken with increasing intensity until the age to come is finally “birthed” and the Messianic Kingdom established at the Second Coming.
