Late Night Conversation, hosted by Kristin Maffei

This week Kristin sits down with British author and editor Jonathan Lee. After the release of his second novel, Jonathan was recognized by The Guardian as “a major new voice in British fiction” and, not long after, moved to Brooklyn and began work with A Public Space magazine. The magazine has been recognized for finding and publishing influential emerging writers.

Listen to the full episode (and Jonathan’s delightful accent) here:

Kristin chats with Jonathan about his own journey from thinking he wanted to be a lawyer to becoming a writer and editor full-time. They also discuss his work with A Public Space – their philosophy and vision for the future, upcoming issues, and their exciting new publishing collaboration with Graywolf Press and the books soon to be published.

In this excerpt, Jonathan touches on two facets of A Public Space‘s work:

An important part of it being called A Public Space is opening the doors to the office, which is an old converted carriage house in Brooklyn, and doing events there. So we do lots of free public events there each year…. Beyond that, our vision is always finding good writers and putting out their challenging, risky work, which might not find a voice elsewhere….
