This one is special for many different reasons and fan bases. Our local Reno and Vegas listeners will absolutely remember how big time of a player he was at Bishop Gorman, whereas our BYU fan base will remember him for his sacrifices to better the team. Jonathan Tavernari is in the house today and we are excited to have him!
His mother is a legendary hoops coach who helped push him to be considered as the top high school player to ever come out of Brazil. He moved to America where he starred at Bishop Gorman. He went on to have an outstanding career at BYU where he earned MWC Freshman of the year, and All-MWC Third Team in both his sophomore and junior seasons while also setting a program record both years for three points made. He sacrificed his starting spot to be the team’s 6th man during his senior season where he earned the MWC 6th man of the year. Tavernari finished his career at BYU as the winningest player in school history and holds the school record for 3 pointers made. He has had continued great success playing overseas and for the Brazilian National Team.
We loved our time with Tavernari. He shared some great stories about growing up in Brazil, Oscar Schmidt, playing through the legal distractions at Bishop Gorman, State game vs Reno High School, BYU, experience overseas, his love for Vegas and MUCH more. One thing we learned is that he is as passionate as you get both on and off the court. He is a high character guy who always put others and the team before himself. JT always found a way on the court, but of off the court? We know the best is yet to come.
Thank you Jonathan Tavernari!
