Wheeler grew up in southern New Mexico, near White Sands. In his new novel, The High Heaven, he explores the parallel rise of space travel and television through the (shining) eyes of a young girl orphaned from a local cult and through her life and travels: on a ranch near White Sands, throughout Texas, and into New Orleans, over the course of her lifetime.
