The first one, a 45-year-old male river hippopotamus named Otis and nicknamed the “smiling hippo” has died at the San Diego Zoo. Otis had been under care for degenerative joint and spinal disease and a decision to euthanize him was made last weekend when his condition declined dramatically, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said in a tweet Monday. Otis got his nickname in 2010 because of a viral photo taken by a zoo visitor that captured him with his teeth displayed in what looked like a giant grin. Otis was born in the wild in East Africa and went to the Los Angeles Zoo before being transferred to San Diego in 2009. The second one is Beloved 'Dolphin Tale' star Winter died of a twisted intestine. Florida’s most famous dolphin Winter, beloved by fans around the world and star of the movie “Dolphin Tale,” died of twisted intestines, according to necropsy results released by the aquarium Saturday. The dolphin’s intestines were in an area impossible to reach through surgery. Winter, who died Thursday, inspired fans young and old after her tail was amputated when it became entangled in a crab trap rope, cutting off circulation. But the prosthetic tail and the dolphin’s miraculous recovery offered hopes to many with illnesses and disabilities.
