He uses his life-affirming memories to accelerate the healing process.

Loved the book
Loved the book. Well written and wove an important "now" event with great life stories that allowed me to see more of the writers journey. The ups as well as the downs. Since I have a personal history of spending 6 months in Long beach NY when i came to America as an 8 year old, this book brought back many of my first memories of coming to America. Flipping cards, the local movie theatre, learning English, being thrown into the local culture. Fun ride for me as well as getting to know the author better Definitely recommend it.
This is a really good book to read--it "wakes you up
This is a really good book to read--it "wakes you up." Mr. Crystal tells more than a story about a colorful, interesting life. The "more" is his identification of so many emotions through so many human experiences--emotions and experiences that we all have in one way or another. Fear, love, friendship, joy, achievements, insecurities, learning, growing, sadness, family--I can go on and on. But he writes about all of this in a simple way that captures you; and then he takes you along in the story of his life. Again, the "more" is that this is the kind of story that will stick with you and that will leave you thinking deeply about your own similar journey--and that is a pleasure. Mr. Crystal has succeeded where many writers fail--he weaves the past into later events and then creates a vision for the future in a very thoughtful way. You will learn something about yourself when you have finished reading this story--and it will make you happy!
Really Good Read That I Couldn't Put Down Till I Finished
This was one of those books I really couldn't set aside. Yes, it's about Richard Crystal's heart surgery and interesting to hear how he dealt with that and so helpful if you are about to face surgery or just have, but there is much more here. If you are a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar fan, you'll love the section about him and their friendship. If you have ever experienced a bit of a sibling rivalry, the book will resonate for you in surprising ways. If you grew up in the New York/Long Island area in the magical 1950s, you'll have some delightful nostalgic moments. This book is for you if you love stories of opportunity - being in the right place at the right time and also making your own opportunities.
