Joy Harjo is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and was named the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States in 2019. Harjo draws on her relation and connection to her Creek community to frame and guide her poetry and storytelling by incorporating Native American spirituality, symbols, and traditions in her work. Harjo uses her platform as a poet, author, and artist to discuss feminist issues such as domestic abuse, the employment and opportunity gap women face, and discrimination of Native American women in white-feminist spaces and conversation. Harjo’s notable works include: A Map to the Next World (2000), her memoir Crazy Brave (2012), and An American Sunrise (2019).
