A Challenging Yet Happy Childhood

On January 3, 1892, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, better known by his pen name J.R.R. Tolkien, came into the world. He spent the first three years of his life in South Africa. However, the harsh climate proved detrimental to his health. Consequently, his mother, Mabel, made the decision to return to England, bringing along her two sons, Ronald and his younger brother, Hilary. Tragically, young Tolkien would never see his father again, as he succumbed to a hemorrhage in South Africa, never having the opportunity to reunite with his family in Great Britain.
