《近思录》是依朱、吕二人的理学思想体系编排的，从宇宙生成的世界本体到孔颜乐处的圣人气象，循着<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">格物穷理</a>，存养而意诚，正心而迁善，修身而复礼，齐家而正伦理，以至治国平天下及古圣王的礼法制度，然后批异端而明圣贤<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">道统</a>。全面阐述了理学思想的主要内容，故此书实可谓囊括了<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">北宋五子</a>及朱吕一派学术的主体。<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">淳熙</a>二年（1175年），<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">吕祖谦</a>从浙江到福建与<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">朱熹</a>会晤，两人在<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">寒泉精舍</a>相与读<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">周敦颐</a>、<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">张载</a>、<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">程颢</a>、<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">程颐</a>等著作，感其“广大闳博，若无津涯”，初学者不易把握其要义，于是精选622条，辑成《近思录》，共分14卷。“近思”二字取自《论语》：“<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">博学而笃志</a>，<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">切问而近思</a>，仁在其中矣。”朱熹取此书名的用意在于，把《近思录》当作学习四子著作的阶梯，四子著作又为学习《六经》的阶梯，以正“厌<a target="_blank" style="text-decoration: none;color:#4990E2">卑近</a>而骛高远”之失。
