Sermon Notes—“Judgment and Deliverance”

May 8, 2016 “We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.”
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Text

4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; 5and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; 7and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men 8(for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), 9then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, 10and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority.
2 Peter 2:4–10 (NASB95)

Using three Old Testament examples, Peter assures believers of judgment and deliverance (2:9):

Example #1:

Angels that Sinned—God will judge the unrighteous.
He will judge on His TIMETABLE
IMMORALITY is a spiritual issue.

6And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day, 7just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

Jude 6–7 (NASB)

Example #2:

Noah’s Day—God will rescue the godly and judge the unrighteous.
Don’t fall for “EVERYONE can’t be WRONG” thinking.

7By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

Hebrews 11:7 (NASB95)

Example #3:

Lot, Sodom and Gomorrah Day—God will rescue the godly and judge the unrighteous.
The godly are RIGHTEOUS by faith, not by WORKS.

22Therefore it was also credited to him as righteousness. 23Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, 24but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.

Romans 4:22–25 (NASB)
