Lesson Text:

7For, because you trusted in your works and your treasures, you also shall be taken; and Chemosh shall go into exile with his priests and his officials. 8The destroyer shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape; the valley shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the Lord has spoken.
Jeremiah 48:7–8 (ESV)

11"Moab has been at ease from his youth and has settled on his dregs; he has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, nor has he gone into exile; so his taste remains in him, and his scent is not changed. 12"Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I shall send to him pourers who will pour him, and empty his vessels and break his jars in pieces. 13Then Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.
Jeremiah 48:11–13 (ESV)

18"Come down from your glory, and sit on the parched ground, O inhabitant of Dibon! For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you; he has destroyed your strongholds. 19Stand by the way and watch, O inhabitant of Aroer! Ask him who flees and her who escapes; say, 'What has happened?' 20Moab is put to shame, for it is broken; wail and cry! Tell it beside the Arnon, that Moab is laid waste.

Jeremiah 48:18–20 (ESV)

The Moabite issue was COMPLACENCY.

COMPLACENT SMUG and uncritically SATISFIED with oneself or one's achievements. (Concise Oxford English Dictionary)

Unchallenged complacency leads to DEFEAT and RUIN.

32For simpletons turn away from me—to death. Fools are destroyed by their own complacency. 33But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm."

Proverbs 1:32–33 (NLT)

12At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, 'The Lord will do nothing, either good or bad.' 13Their wealth will be plundered, their houses demolished. Though they build houses, they will not live in them; though they plant vineyards, they will not drink the wine."

Zephaniah 1:12–13 (NIV)

The popular antidote for complacency is PARANOIA which is another way of saying be FEAR.

8Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

1 Peter 5:8–9 (ESV)

God's antidote for complacency is to be spiritually ALERT and RESOLUTE.

1Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

1 Peter 2:1–3 (NKJV)
