  • Billo Is the New Baddie (ft Simar): Reclaiming Women’s Space in Punjabi Music
What does it really take to survive, step back, and reclaim your space in the Punjabi music industry?
In this episode, I sit down with Toronto/GTA-based singer, songwriter, and composer Simar (@simarsworld_) for an unfiltered, two-part conversation covering the long, unvarnished journey of becoming an independent pop star. With the release of her debut album Billo, she joins a long line of trailblazers like Surinder Kaur, Amarjot Kaur, Miss Pooja, Jasmine Sandlas and many more women who have consistently gone against the grain to have their voices heard.

After 10+ years in the Punjabi music industry, Simar finally pulls back the curtain on the untold reality of navigating the scene. From facing uncomfortable, male-dominated trap-house studio setups to stepping away, experiencing starts and stops, and ultimately finding her way back to music on her own terms after becoming a mother.

This is a very special episode and I’m so excited for you all to hear it (both parts) <3

  • LateBloomer’s Sunny & Sugenja on Defying South Asian Expectations Part 2
What happens when you trade the traditional "approved" career path for the unpredictable world of acting?

In this episode, we’re sitting down with Sunny and Sugenja, two hilarious and brilliant cast members from the hit Crave series LateBloomer. They take us behind the scenes of life on set, give us an exclusive sneak peek into what to expect for Season 3, and share their personal journeys into the acting world.

  • Taboos of the Female Body: A History of Women's Nudity & Modesty in South Asia
When did "modesty" become a tool for control in South Asia? We often assume that current conservative norms are "ancient tradition," and that nudity or revealing clothing is Western influence. In reality, the actual Western influence is the idea that nudity is a lack of modesty or a moral failing. That is a Victorian belief, not a South Asian one.
In this episode, we trace the timeline of skin exposure from ancient civilizations to the modern day. From the gender-fluid roles of precolonial Kerala to the Mughal and royal courts of Punjab, we explore how the arrival of Victorian morality and the "Colonial Gaze" transformed the female silhouette into a battlefield. We also discuss how these patriarchal shifts continue to negatively impact not just women, but the lives of men and boys today.

    In this episode:
    • 00:00 Taboos and Stigmas behind Nudity
    • 07:19 Ancient civilizations and true modesty
    • 14:49 Gender roles in precolonial Kerala
    • 20:29 The Mughal era and pre colonial Punjab
    • 28:19 When did things start changing?
    • 34:07 Patriarchal need for control
    • 37:54 The consequences men and boys face
