Juicy Communication 101: The Basics

Listen Later

In this episode we discuss the four basic communication styles: passive, passive aggresive, aggresive and assertive. We talk about how our childhood impacts the way we relate today and refernce the Attachment Styles. We speak on fight/flight/fawn/freeze responses to a disregulated nervous system and how that impacts the way we show up in communication and reactivity. We briefly touch on communicating with minimal harm, also known as Non-Violent Communication. The end of the episode offers different assertive phrases to practice (including mirroring/reflecting, checking in, saying 'thank you' versus 'I'm sorry' and respectfully declining etc).
This episode will prep you for the rest of the series. Please consider listening to the episodes in order, as they are going to build off of eachother. Communication 101 will serve as the foundation.
Action steps:
1) Ask yourself: which communication style do you feel you currently lean towards the most (passive, passive-aggressive, aggressive, assertive)?
2) Ask yourself: which tendency do I have when I am feeling overwhelm (fight/flight/fawn/freeze)?
3) Take any online quiz to find out your Attachment Style. I recommend using more than one site and cross observing your results on different platforms. Be sure to be super honest with your answers. Here are a couple links to quizzes:

4) Notice when you tend to apologize and consider swapping it out for a "thank you" instead. Pause or reframe when you witness this happening within yourself.
