Sometimes the most important business lesson inside a historic moment isn't the achievement itself - it's what happens the morning after.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human being to step onto the surface of the Moon, watched by more than 530 million people in the largest television audience in history to that point. The goal President Kennedy had set before Congress in 1961 - landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth before the end of the decade - was complete.

Within months, public interest had dropped sharply, budget cuts had begun, and three planned Apollo missions had been cancelled. By 1973, NASA's own budget submission stated simply that the program's objectives had been accomplished and no further funding was required. The race was over. The engine that had powered it had nothing left to run on.
