July Unrest A Year On

This week, we commemorate the first anniversary of the July Unrest that took place in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng. The unrest claimed 340 lives and destroyed R50 billion of the economy. We saw expert panel reports showing the security cluster was unprepared, political factions mobilizing thousands to loot and racial tensions boil over. As we patiently wait for the SA Human Rights Commission investigative report to be released, we reflect on what has happened in the past year. In this hour, we unpack the political, social and economic lessons we have had to learn from one of the most violent mobilizations in the post-democratic era.
