"Jump" by Van Halen - 1984

Listen Later

This week Neil O.U. fights off a case of deja vu and hops back into the hot seat to discuss the 1984 number one hit "Jump" by Van Halen. Lead guitarist Eddie Van Halen's instrumentation and musical stylings had taken a questionable turn in recent years, culminating in the band's only number one hit, whose heavy use of synthesizer was reviled by the other members of the band. The album 1984 would also mark the final appearance of David Lee Roth whose jump kicks and stage antics were admired by millions and sadly missed by dozens of loyal fans. How did the worst song in the band's catalog become their only number one hit? How did Eddie convince the band he was actually the long lost 6th member of DEVO? Hey you! Who said that? All these questions and more will be answered on this week's episode of Single File.
