The Bible says that faith is "the evidence of things we cannot see" (Hebrews 11:1). This means that faith is not based on logical proof or material evidence, but on trust in God.
Jesus invites Peter to "come" to him on the water, even though it seemed impossible. Peter's faith enabled him to walk on water for a time, but he began to sink when he took his eyes off of Jesus.
Christians are encouraged to have the same kind of childlike faith that Peter had. This means being willing to trust God even when it seems impossible, and to "jump in" and follow him.
