The Talking Point

June 16 Special broadcast: What should we understand by being educated?

Listen Later

The clip you’ve just heard is from Dr Nthato Motlana who was a community activist at the time. He was explaining to British journalists after the shooting on the 16th of June about how the learners at the time felt about Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. So today with my two co-hosts we thought to engage with you our audience about what we understand about having an education. Many people with degrees still find themselves unemployed. On the other hand, some commentators feel that the country’s education system is letting us down. Does a person in matric understand what is required of them to make it to tertiary and are they prepared for whatever it is that they would like to study and specialise in once they graduate? Then for those who are at tertiary level, do they understand what industry requires of them and the role they would like to play once they’ve have a job or start an enterprise?
