James gives a lot of practical teaching up to this point in his writing. Now he changes directions - adds something new. Now he starts talking about the root of it all - he starts talking about the heart, what's inside.

Bitter envy, selfish ambition, etc. He calls is false wisdom. We all have it.

So what do we do about it? Again, practical teaching. Submit yourselves to God, resist the devil, draw near to God, cleanse your hands, purify your heart. We can sum this up with just one of them: draw near to God.
