A less talented actor could have made Thelma into a stereotype of a retirement home, but Squibb, of course, gives her character a kind and considerate depth. Thelma on Afdah.com is still full of fire, but she's still getting used to her newfound mobility and her husband's passing. The dynamic between Squibb and Roundtree is very endearing, as the two of them share some poignant heartfelt conversations on the highs and lows of growing older. The writing by Margolin plays on the natural goofiness of an elderly action star, but it never makes Thelma the center of attention. She may seem elderly and fragile at first, but by the conclusion of the narrative, she has shown us unexpectedly deep reserves of cunning and wit.
