Jungian Archetypes and the Genotype
Archetype or Genotype - What's at the heart of Psychology?"
presentation. I have been mentored by and worked with Dr. Roger Strachan for several years now. Strachan is a gestalt therapist and a genetic psychologist. In my time with Roger I have learned a ton about how to facilitate gestalt therapy as well as a working understanding of human development and personality. His teaching posits that we are who we are. We come into the world with genetic predispositions both physically and psychologically. Roger has taught me that learning to work with who we are and accept it is transformational. Interestingly, Jung believed in working with archetypal images which is very similar to working with one’s own genetic personality parts. Now that I am also an indirect descendant of Carl Jung’s teachings. This puts me in a unique position to compare both teachings as I observe them. I believe this is a useful exercise in strengthening my psychological prowess while also honoring the brilliant capacity of both domains. In learning from Jung and Strachan I am inspired to bridge the gap between archetype and genotype. In doing so I believe the future of psychology will benefit.
