Has good manners gone out of style? Do you find yourself surprised when you see someone using proper etiquette and good manners?

Even though I would prefer our society to return to a time when our children were taught to be polite and treat others with respect, it does create a great opportunity for those of us who believe and embrace this practice.

If you are in sales, own your own business or you are looking for a new career opportunity, good manners will set you apart from the crowd. It is not the only component required in making a good impression but it is essential and bad manners will close the door on many opportunities.

Here are five reasons I believe manners are important:

1. Good manners show gratitude, not entitlement. Like it or not, we live in a society where many people feel entitled. Having an attitude of genuine appreciation and gratitude will draw people to you.
2. Good manners set you apart. Manners make you more likeable and memorable.
3. Good manners open doors. People will judge you by their first impression. They will decide to do business with you and if they want you on their team by how well you treat them.
4. Good manners show respect. Everyone wants to be respected, not just your elders. Treat everyone like you want to be treated.
5. Good manners never go out of style. Society may have changed but people have not. Dale Carnegie’s book, How to Win Friends and Influence People has stood the test of time because the way people want to be treated has not changed.
