Two-hundred-and-eighty workers who were fired 23 years ago by the now disbanded Midrand Council, will now be employed by the City of Johannesburg. The dismissals in 1994 followed a strike by municipal workers against corruption and nepotism within the council. The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu), in collaboration with the city, believes that this historic bargain will vindicate the honest workers who suffered at the hands of an administration which preferred protecting corrupt officials.
