On this episode, we speak with Dr. Jerry Hatfield about his career and his research contributions to regenerative agriculture. Dr. Hatfield served as the laboratory director at the USDA’s National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment in Ames, Iowa, for over 30 years between 1989 and 2020. He was inducted into the USDA Agricultural Research Service Hall of Fame in 2014, authored or co-authored 493 peer-reviewed publications, and is a Kansas State Agronomy alum.

Her research focuses on microbial ecology, microbial diversity, and nutrient cycling in streams and soils. We discuss how her research has a variety of applications to range and cropland systems, including the microbial impact of fire and grazing on native rangeland, the potential for the principles learned from that research to be applied in integrated crop-livestock systems, and which microbiological indicators best help us understand how human management impacts the living components of the soil.
