Karaiyin Suvadigal (Transl: Traces of the shore), is an original radio programme series produced by Kadal Osai FM 90.4 CR.
Dive deep with us as we go back to the roots of the sea-faring community of Pamban Island. This series is a loving bridge, reconnecting the fisherfolk with the ancient rhythm and profound power of the ocean. Each episode is a holistic journey—a sonic exploration of life on the shore.
Songs have a significant role in all cultures throughout history, with music and singing being an integral part of several traditional as well as modern livelihood methods. The fishing practice in Pamban Island is no different. Fisherfolk have their own unique song called the Amba song which is sung while fishing to boost and motivate them during extremely physical tasks. The Amba song is not one song but more of a genre, and different lyrics, tunes and variations are used for different activities. In this episode of Karaiyin Suvadigal, we speak with the fishing community about the Amba songs they have been using for generations. Live singing of the song is also included in this episode.
